Helping Electric Utilities Design and Manage Oil Containment

United States

As the world’s largest professional organization dedicated to advancing technology, IEEE manages hundreds of industry standards recognized by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI). Since 2009, ECT has worked with IEEE to regularly update their Guide for Containment and Control of Oil Spills in Substations (Std 980-2022). The guide helps electric utilities design and manage oil containment for oil-filled electrical equipment in substations, preventing spills from reaching the environment.

ECT’s ongoing work and participation with the guide allows our team to work with electric utilities and contributes to our industry leadership.

The latest updates published in March 2022 cover:

  • Prevention and containment of oil spills in substations
  • Environmental and regulatory reasons for containment
  • Typical sources of oil spills in substations
  • Typical designs and materials for containment & dewatering systems at substations
  • Oil containment and control of oil spills at substations
  • Criteria to determine when containment is needed
  • Guidelines to prepare a typical SPCC Plan in accordance with U.S. Federal Regulations – CFR Title 40 Part 112
