The Long Pond Sewer Expansion Project is a key Phase I project under the Town of Barnstable’s Comprehensive Wastewater Management Plan (CWMP), developed to expand sewer infrastructure, improve water quality, and support the Town’s long-term wastewater management goals. Reliance on septic systems within the watershed has contributed to nutrient loading, algal growth, and bacteria impacts in local ponds and lakes, threatening sensitive environmental resources. These impacts threaten the environment and tourism; a sector critical to Barnstable’s economy and its identity as one of Cape Cod’s largest and most prominent towns. This project called for careful design evaluation, thorough site investigation, and sound engineering to support long-term system performance. The Town engaged ECT to provide comprehensive engineering services from preliminary design through construction-ready documents to support this critical infrastructure project.
The project scope centers on evaluating and refining the Town’s conceptual sewer design, including siting pump stations in optimal and resilient locations, and managing supplemental surveying and geotechnical investigations. Preliminary and final design covers approximately 9.1 miles of a new gravity and low-pressure sewer system, along with two new pump stations and associated force mains, drainage improvements, and utility relocations. Beyond design, the work encompasses permitting and regulatory coordination, cost estimating, schedule development, and support with State Revolving Fund (SRF) requirements and other grant funding applications.
